A Walk in the Woods

With such beautiful December weather today, we decided to go for a walk in the woods. Our mission: to find and identify a woodpecker. We found much more.

A Nature Walk

One of our favorite parts of home schooling is frequent nature walks.

Last week, we learned about pileated woodpeckers. We suspected that there were some in Rasmussen Woods, so today we went to investigate.

We not only found many of the pileated's distinctive large oval shaped holes, we had a lot of fun and got a little muddy.

These Days

This summer is flying by. We are busy keeping up with some schoolwork and taking lots of nature walks. Jojo took these photos at Rasmussen Woods this week:

We find lots of neat things and learn interesting facts, like how caterpillars love to eat carrots.

JR just started K4:

Jojo is partway through K5 and only has four lessons left in reading. That will have him reading at a first grade level.

One of our favorite places is the Rapidan Dam.

We like to walk the Red Jacket Trail early in the morning.

And the usually find some other way to entertain themselves throughout the day.
